Gender and the Geography of Crime in Nineteenth-Century Leiden and Amsterdam

This article builds on recent calls in urban and gender history for a better understanding of the interaction between environment. Its focus is male female offending behaviours their relation to space, specifically spaces shared by women men: home, street outside house, main thoroughfares. The aims shed light common practices understandings men women, while highlighting potential differences. analysis based mapping recorded Leiden police court Amsterdam correctional second half nineteenth century. In part, confirms what other historians have already shown: were average accused committing an offence closer home than men, but they also very much present streets around house.
